Attorney Harold Cogdell, Jr. is a native of Kinston, North Carolina. Mr. Cogdell attended North Carolina A &T State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management 1991. Attorney Cogdell earned his Juris Doctor degree from the North Carolina Central University School of Law in 1996. During his time at the NCCU Scholl of Law, Harold was elected class president and humbled to serve as a legal research assistant to University Chancellor and renowned Civil Rights attorney Julius L. Chambers.
Following graduation, Mr. Cogdell accepted a position as an Assistant District Attorney with the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office. On April 1, 1998, Harold founded the Law Offices of Harold Cogdell, Jr., P.C. Since that time, Harold, along with the aid of a dedicated staff, has represented thousands of clients in state and federal court before judges and juries. Harold Cogdell, Jr. is a seasoned criminal defense and business law attorney that consistently seeks to influence the outcome of his clients’ legal challenges in a favorable and prompt manner. Attorney Cogdell has successfully represented clients in more than twenty-five (25) North Carolina counties throughout the state ranging from Onslow and New Hanover counties in Eastern NC to Buncombe and Henderson counties in Western NC. Attorney Cogdell has also represented clients in state and federal court in the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of North Carolina, District of South Carolina, Northern District of Georgia, and District of Kansas. Harold has been recognized by the National Trial Lawyers as a Top 100 Criminal Defense Lawyer for North Carolina and Super Lawyers, a distinction held by no more than 5% of licensed attorneys in the State.
Harold has served as the Chairman of the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners, Chairman for the Charlotte Housing Authority Board of Commissioners and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Horizon Development Properties, Inc. Also, Harold has served on the Board of Directors for the Charlotte Chamber, North Carolina A&T State University Real Estate Foundation, Stratford-Richardson YMCA, and N.C. Association of Black Lawyers. Harold is a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and the 100 Black Men of Greater Charlotte. Attorney Cogdell is a member of the NCATSU Queen City Alumni Endowment Campaign Steering Committee, a charter member of the Mu Iota Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Scholarship Endowment and assisted with the establishment of the KHS Viking Legacy Foundation to provide crisis assistance to Kinston High School students. Harold has been elected and served two terms on Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioner (Chairman 2011-2012, Vice-Chairman 2008-2011) and one term as a Charlotte City Councilmember. Harold chose to not run for reelection in 2012 to focus on raising his son and enhancing the expertise and capacity of the Law Offices of Harold Cogdell, Jr. P.L.L.C.
